O’Reilly SHS student stabbed to death

The tragic death of an 18-year-old final-year student from O’Reilly Senior High School has sparked outrage and concern over safety and discipline on school campuses. Edward Borketey Sackey, a General Arts student, was stabbed on Monday during a heated argument with a fellow student, which escalated into violence. The incident occurred shortly after the students completed an exam. Sackey reportedly got into a dispute with a schoolmate, identified only as Godwin, a Visual Arts student. The argument allegedly centered on a comparison of whose father was wealthier. The disagreement quickly devolved into a physical confrontation, during which Godwin allegedly stabbed Sackey multiple times. Sackey was rushed to the LEKMA Hospital by his peers in a desperate attempt to save his life. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. Videos and photos circulating on social media show the frantic efforts of students to help Sackey, as well as an image of him lying unconscious on a white cloth. The news of Sackey’s death has sent shockwaves through the school and the broader community, prompting a crucial meeting between the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the school’s management on Tuesday. The meeting, which involved the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Stephen Abamfo, and the Municipal Director of Education at the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), focused on how discipline is maintained on campus and the ongoing investigation into the incident. In a statement, Mr. Abamfo confirmed that an investigation was underway to uncover the circumstances leading to the tragic event. He also assured the public that measures were being taken to enhance safety at the school. Meanwhile, the father of the deceased, devastated by the loss of his son, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the school authorities. “The school authority has not said anything from yesterday up till now. The police have not called, the school authority has not called, even the boy who killed my son, neither the family have even reached me. That is why we are here to seek justice for my son,” he lamented. He recounted the painful sequence of events leading to his son’s death, describing how he was at work when he received a call from his niece, informing him of the altercation. Despite rushing to the school, he arrived only to learn that his son had already succumbed to his injuries. The suspect, Godwin, has since been arrested and is in police custody as investigations continue. The father of the deceased has demanded justice for his son and called for accountability from the school’s administration. Source: Ghana/Starrfm.com.gh

Bolga: Soldier detained over rape accusation

A soldier has been detained over an accusation of raping an 18-year-old hotel attendant. The incident reportedly happened on Monday [September 2, 2024] at about 3pm at a guest house at Soe, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region. The 18-year-old victim is said to have run to a nearby house to raise an alarm. Following that, a team of military personnel from the Abilba Barracks of the 11th Mechanised Battalion stormed the area and took the said soldier away. Graphic Online’s Upper East correspondent, Gilbert Mawuli Agbey reports that the victim [name withheld] said the soldier arrived at the guest house around 9am on Monday and paid GH¢150 for a full day lodging. She alleged that after leading the soldier to his room, he started making sexual advances towards her, but she declined. Not satisfied with that the soldier reportedly continued his request and further demanded to have sex with her. Not long after, a woman said to have been invited by the soldier to the guest house arrived at the premises in a rickshaw, and the soldier received and ushered her into the room. However, the woman reportedly declined to stay with the soldier, and after a few minutes, left the guest house. After she had left, the soldier reportedly returned to the victim [18-year-old], and reportedly pulled a pair of scissors, and threatened her to give in to his sexual demand. When the victim stood her grounds by not accepting his demands, the soldier dragged her into the room, and reportedly forcibly had sex with her, and took pictures of her after the incident. Subsequently, the victim managed to run out and raised an alarm, and after the information went round, some soldiers from the Abilba barracks stormed the scene, picked the soldier, and sent him into custody. Meanwhile, the victim has lodged an official report at the regional office of the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service. A source within the unit told Graphic Online that a form was subsequently issued to the victim to undergo medical examination at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. Dad jailed 15 years for defiling daughter, 12

In a heart-wrenching tale of betrayal, trust and abuse, a 43-year-old chainsaw operator, Ishmael Addo, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for defiling his 12-year-old stepdaughter. This disturbing case has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the urgent need for collective action against gender-based violence and child abuse. The verdict marks a significant milestone in the fight against sexual exploitation and abuse of minors. It sends a strong message to perpetrators that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated, and that justice will be served, no matter how long it takes. The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, revealed that Addo lived with the victim and her mother, his girlfriend, at Asofa. When the mother travelled to Afram Plains, leaving the victim in Addo’s care, he took advantage of her absence and abused the child. The victim confided in a co-tenant about the abuse, which occurred on August 3 and 4, 2024. When the mother returned, she confronted Addo and reported the matter to the Asofa police, leading to his arrest. Mother asleep The court heard that Addo had previously had sex with the victim twice while her mother was asleep. He threatened to punish the victim if she spoke out, but she bravely admitted the sexual conduct when she was questioned by her mother. The verdict marks a significant milestone in the fight against sexual exploitation and abuse of minors. It sends a strong message to perpetrators that such heinous crimes will not be tolerated and that justice will be served. The case also underscores the importance of community vigilance and support for victims of abuse. The victim’s courage in speaking out and seeking help has brought her abuser to justice and potentially saved others from suffering a similar fate. Her bravery has also sparked a wider conversation about the need for increased awareness, education, and support for survivors of gender-based violence. Gender violence As Ghana grapples with the scourge of gender-based violence, this case serves as a stark reminder of the need for sustained efforts to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children. It is a call to action for policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organisations to work together to create a safer and more just society for all. The incident has also raised questions about the adequacy of existing laws and policies for the protection of children from abuse and exploitation. Tougher penalties Advocates are calling for tougher penalties for perpetrators and increased support for survivors, including access to counselling, medical care and legal assistance. In the wake of this tragedy, the community is coming together to support the victim and her family. Local organisations are offering counselling services and support groups for survivors of gender-based violence, while community leaders are working to raise awareness about the importance of protecting children from abuse. As the nation mourns the loss of innocence and trust, one thing is clear: this case must serve as a catalyst for change. — GNA

YouTube chef found guilty of gruesome murder on Thai holiday island

A court in Thailand has found Daniel Sancho Bronchalo, a member of a famous Spanish acting family and a YouTube chef, guilty of premeditated murder and sentenced him to life in prison, in a lurid case that has gripped Spain. The 30-year-old was convicted of the murder of Edwin Arrieta Arteaga, a 44-year-old plastic surgeon from Colombia, when both were vacationing on the Thai holiday island of Koh Pha-ngan in August 2023. The case has generated enormous interest in Spain because the defendant’s father, Rodolfo Sancho, is a well-known actor, and scores of Spanish reporters have flown in for the trial. At his trial on the island of Samui, Sancho claimed he got into a fight after Arrieta allegedly tried to sexually assault him. He said Arrieta fell as they scuffled and hit his head on a bathtub, losing consciousness and then dying. Sancho acknowledged dismembering the victim’s body and disposing of the parts on land and at sea. The Koh Samui provincial court issued an initial sentence of death for Sancho, but in its ruling commuted it to life imprisonment due to his cooperation during the trial, according to police. Bussakorn Kaewleeled, a lawyer for the victim’s family, said they were happy with the outcome. “The plaintiff is satisfied with the sentence because he will be put in prison for life and they receive some financial compensation,” Bussakorn told reporters outside the court. When asked about Sancho’s reaction, she said: “He is sad, but we can’t forget the loss of the dead one.” Sancho claimed he killed Arrieta, 44, in self-defence, and admitted hiding the body, but denied destroying the Colombian’s passport. The trial heard that Sancho chopped up Arrieta’s body and put the parts in plastic bags before distributing them around Koh Phangan. While Thailand still has the death penalty for some crimes, including premeditated murder, it rarely carries out executions – the last being in 2018. Arrieta’s family said before the verdict that they favoured a sentence of life imprisonment. Guardian.

Court sentences rider for road traffic offences

The Hohoe Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Justice Adzaglo, a rider, for riding without license, use of motorcycle without insurance and without road worthiness. Adzaglo pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced on his own plea to an amount GH¢1,800 or serve four months in prison if he defaults. The Court, presided over by Madam Comfort Asamoah Sarpong, ordered the convict not to use any motor or vehicle on the road until he acquired a license. Chief Inspector Charles Aziati, the Prosecutor, told the Court that on July 18, 2024, at about 0605 hours, personnel of the Volta North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, who were on duty at the Hohoe main market traffic light, spotted the convict. He was riding a Vista motorcycle with registration number M-21-VR 462 emerging from the Alabato Pharmacy direction, and on reaching the main market traffic light, refused to stop when the light was red and he rode through. Chief Inspector Aziati said Adzaglo was intercepted and asked to switch off the engine and hand over the ignition key of the motorcycle to the MTTD official for onward processing. He said after turning off the engine, Adzaglo refused to hand over the key, so the police had to push the motorcycle from that spot to the police station. Chief Inspector Aziati said the convict later followed up to the police station and during an interrogation, it was found out that he did not have a riding license. He said it was also found that the motorcycle did not have insurance and road use certificate on it. GNA

KNUST graduate death: Family releases new evidence to challenge police, hotel

The family of Lois Koranteng, a KNUST graduate who was found dead under mysterious circumstances at a hotel in Takoradi, has raised serious allegations against the Ghana Police Service and the hotel management. The family is accusing them of mishandling the investigation and providing misleading information to the public. The family claims the Police lied about conducting the autopsy on June 8th, the same day Lois was found dead, asserting that the autopsy was actually performed on June 11th. They demand an explanation for this discrepancy. The Police, after their preliminary investigations, reported no blood stains were found on Lois, but the family claims to have photographic evidence suggesting otherwise, including a “reddish liquid” from her nose. The family criticized the Police for their lack of communication and transparency, revealing that aside from a planned visit to cover up investigative shortcomings, the police have not provided any updates or assurances about the ongoing investigation. They also claimed Police have been unable to unlock Lois’s phone, which the family believes is critical to understanding the events leading to her death. The hotel management is also under scrutiny. The family disputes the hotel’s claim that their security cameras were not working at the time of Lois’s death and has evidence suggesting otherwise. They questioned why the hotel dismissed its management staff following Lois’s death and replaced the security cameras three days later. The family states that contrary to the hotel’s claim that the pool guard had travelled on June 7th, the security guard, who doubles as the lifeguard, was on duty that day. They alleged that, the hotel is preventing a specific female staff member from speaking to third parties about the incident and has been pressuring the family to remove their social media posts addressing the concerns and revealing the truth. The family also seeks to expose Lois’ employer. They claimed that the company allegedly hurried to obtain her laptop password from the family just hours after her death, raising questions about their motives. The family indicated that they have a voice recording of this request and insist on transparency from the company. The family has presented some of their evidence and threatened to release more if the implicated parties do not provide satisfactory explanations.   myjoyonline
