Father, son sentenced for conspiracy, trespass and stealing teak trees

Sixty-year-old Edward Worwornyo and his son Senyo Augustus Worwornyo, 30 years old, both herbalists, have been sentenced by the Hohoe Circuit Court for conspiracy to commit crime, trespass and stealing of teak trees. The convicts, who appeared before the court, pleaded not guilty to the charges. They were fully tried, found guilty, convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment. They are to pay for the teak trees’ value to the complainant as well as pay a fine of GH₵720 or in default, serve two years in addition. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Charles Aziati before the sentencing told the Court presided over by Mr. Michael Johnson Abbey that nowadays when a court of competent jurisdiction gave judgement in a civil matter, particularly land case, the affected parties instead of going on appeal would take the law into their own hands. He said the affected parties would also use force to trespass on the disputed land, which if the other party also retaliated, might result in conflict, which could end in bloodletting. Chief Inspector Aziati said the convicts were some of the people hence the Court should give them severe punishment to serve as deterrent to them and others. He said the complainant was a carpenter while the convicts were a father and son respectively. Chief Inspector Aziati said the complainant owned a teak and palm plantation at Gbi-Wegbe and on March 24, 2021, he visited the plantation and realised that some of his teak trees had been felled but did not know the person behind the activity. He said on March 26, 2021, the complainant visited the plantation again and met the convict’s son, who was the second convict and three others sawing the felled teak trees. Chief Inspector Aziati said the complainant reported the case to the police and the second convict was arrested but during investigations he stated that he was sent by his father, the first convict. He said the first convict was also arrested and he claimed ownership of the teak trees by stating that the plantation on which the trees were felled was for him. Chief Inspector Aziati said the parties were then put before the Divisional Police Commander, who instructed that none of them should convey the felled trees from the site until police were done with their investigations. He said the first convict defied the instructions given by the police commander and went to convey the felled trees. Chief Inspector Aziati said the police, however, continued with investigations within which the complainant furnished police with a judgement on the land from Hohoe Circuit Court, which went in his favour as well as a site plan covering the land. He said the convicts could not furnish the police with any document regarding the land on which the trees were planted even though they were given the chance to do so. GNA

The student, whose name has been withheld, had been provisionally charged with murder. The court did not accept his plea and ordered him to return on September 19, 2024. The adjournment was to enable the police to conduct further investigations into the matter. Edward Borketey Sackey was murdered by a classmate after a disagreement over who had wealthier parents. Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow the investigative process to unfold. In a statement issued in Accra on September 4, 2024, the GES expressed profound regret over the tragic incident at O’Reilly Senior High School that resulted in the death of Edward Sackey. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the bereaved family, friends and the entire school community.” According to the statement, on September 4, 2024, the Director General of GES led a delegation to visit the school and the deceased’s family to offer condolences. High Court restrains Prof. Nyarko-Boampong from holding himself out as UCC VC

A Cape Coast High Court has granted an injunction filed by John Mevemeo, a resident of Millennium City-Kasoa in the Central Region, against the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof. Johnson Nyarko-Boampong. The court’s decision restrains Prof. Nyarko-Boampong from acting as Vice-Chancellor. Mr Mevemeo is challenging the University of Cape Coast’s decision to renew Prof. Nyarko-Boampong’s appointment until July 31, 2026, arguing that it violates the 1992 Constitution and should be declared null and void. The court, on Wednesday, granted the order for an interlocutory injunction restraining Prof. Nyarko-Boampong from performing any duties as Vice Chancellor upon the expiration of his current term, pending the final determination of the suit. The court, however, deferred its reasons for the granting of the application to Thursday, September 5, 2024. Mr Mevemeo argued that the UCC Council’s renewal decision breached Article 199(1) of the Constitution and statutes 8.15 and 8.16 of the UCC Statutes 2016. He requested the court to set aside the July 28, 2023, decision and issue a perpetual injunction preventing the defendants from acting upon this renewal. Prof. Nyarko-Boampong’s initial four-year term as Vice Chancellor began on August 1, 2020, and was set to end on July 31, 2024. According to the UCC statutes, his tenure could be renewed for up to three years, provided it does not extend beyond the statutory retirement age of 60. The plaintiff contended that, given that Prof. Nyarko-Boampong was born on September 18, 1965, he should retire by September 18, 2025, rendering the extension to July 31, 2026, illegal. The plaintiff says despite this, the UCC governing council, which has the authority to appoint the vice chancellor, held a meeting on Friday, July 28, 2023, where the VC’s appointment was renewed for another term extending to July 31, 2026. The plaintiff further argued that this renewal is contrary to law and a clear breach of Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution. “Prof. Johnson Nyarko-Boampong was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast for a four-year term starting on August 1, 2020, and ending on July 31, 2024. “His tenure was subject to renewal for up to three additional years, provided it did not extend beyond the statutory retirement age of 60 years. “Prof. Nyarko-Boampong’s engagement letter aligns with Statute 8.2 of the University of Cape Coast Statutes 2016 and Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana,” he averred. The plaintiff also claimed the UCC Council did not comply with the procedural requirements for appointment and renewal as outlined in Statutes 8.15 and 8.16 of the UCC Statutes 2016 and Article 195(3) of the 1992 Constitution. “The UCC statute provides sufficient provisions for the university’s administration in the event that there is no Vice-Chancellor or if the Vice Chancellor is unable to perform his duties. “The university will not suffer any hardship if the Vice Chancellor is restrained from performing his duties after his current tenure ends on July 31, 2024,” Mr Mevemeo states. The plaintiff further averred to the court that the UCC statutes provide for the administration of the university in the absence or incapacity of the Vice Chancellor, arguing that the university will not face undue hardship if Prof. Nyarko-Boampong is restrained from performing his duties after his current tenure expires on July 31, 2024. Lawyers for the university and the Vice Chancellor have indicated they will file for a stay of execution. MYJOYONLINE

Ugandan Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei dies after brutal petrol attack by ex-boyfriend

Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner who competed in the recent Paris 2024 Olympics, has tragically passed away following a vicious petrol attack by her ex-boyfriend in Kenya. The incident has once again highlighted the alarming rise in violence against female athletes in the region. Cheptegei, who finished 44th in the Olympic marathon, sustained extensive burns to 80% of her body after being doused in petrol and set on fire by her former partner, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, during a dispute over a piece of land. The attack occurred on Sunday in Endebess, Trans-Nzoia county, where Cheptegei lived and trained. Despite being rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, Cheptegei’s condition deteriorated, and she ultimately succumbed to her injuries on Thursday morning. Dr. Owen Menach, the head of the hospital, confirmed that all of her organs had failed. In a heartbreaking statement, Uganda’s athletics federation expressed their profound sorrow, saying, “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence. As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.” Cheptegei’s father, Joseph Cheptegei, had earlier pleaded for justice, stating that he had never witnessed such an inhumane act in his life. The athlete’s former boyfriend, Ndiema, was also admitted to the hospital with less severe burns and is currently in intensive care, with his condition described as “improving and stable.” This tragic incident comes just two years after the killings of fellow East African athletes Agnes Tirop and Damaris Mutua, with their partners identified as the main suspects in both cases. Tirop’s husband is currently facing murder charges, which he denies, while a hunt for Mutua’s boyfriend continues. 3news

Court orders destruction of 256 sacks of cannabis

The Drug Law Enforcement Unit of the Ghana Police Service has been given the green light to destroy 256 fertilizer sacks of dried leaves all certified to be cannabis. Police say the destruction had become necessary due to the long period of storage leading to congestion at the Unit. According to the Police, some of the exhibits were derelict without any suspects and others are cases in which the Attorney General had advised against prosecution and the remaining were for cases in which accused persons were discharged for want of prosecution. Moving for the order to destroy the 256 sacks of cannabis, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong informed the Court that the Police had attached the Attorney General’s advice to the application. ASP Frimpong said the order of destruction had become necessary because of its bulky nature and that it had occupied the office space of the Drug Law Enforcement Unit, CID Headquarters. He said the Unit needed the office spaces to perform administrative work, adding cannabis not stored special silos had health implications. The Court presided over by Mr Isaac Addo granted the application and ordered the destruction of the cannabis under the supervision of officials from the Ghana Police Service, Narcotics Control Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, official of the Court and the Media. Three chainsaw operators in court for illegal logging

Three chainsaw operators have appeared before the Fiapre Circuit Court in the Sunyani West Municipality for illegally harvesting 45 pieces of Cidrella trees valued GHC146, 250 in the Amama Forest Reserve in the Bono Region. The accused persons were Prince Owusu, 38 years, residing at Abesim, Ransford Solomon, 36 years, also resident of Benu Nkwanta and Johnson Berko, 20 years, also residing at Kyiridua, all in the Sunyani Municipality. When the case was heard, they all pleaded not guilty to the charge of entering a forest reserve and harvesting timber without Timber Utilization Contract contrary to section 23(1) of the Timber Resource Management Act 2002 (Act 617) as amended. The court presided by Akua Adoma Addae adjourned till September 27, 2024, for a case management conference to commence. However, another suspect, only known as Ebenezer, is currently on the run. Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Eric Agyenim Boateng told the court that the complainant, Eugene Kwabena Opoku is the Sunyani Forest Range Manager. On August 29, 2024, around 0900 hours, the complainant and his team conducted patrols at the Amama Forest Reserve, near Atronie in the Sunyani Municipality and sighted the accused persons in the reserve. C/Insp. Boateng said the complainant and his team heard a sound of a chainsaw machine in the reserve, followed up with the noise and discovered that the accused persons had allegedly felled 45 Cidrella trees, converting them into lumber. Prosecution said the team arrested the accused persons and confiscated a chainsaw machine in their possession and handed them and the machine to the police and added that during police interrogation the accused persons admitted entering the reserve and harvested the trees. Mr Francis Brobbey, the District Manager of the Sunyani Forest District later told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview after the hearing that illegal logging and other human activities were fast depleting the reserve forest. He said if the situation was not brought under control, then the objectives of the government Green Ghana Initiative could not be achieved and called for collective efforts to preserve the nation’s forest reserves. Mr Brobbey said the Amama reserve forest required protection because most of the trees in the forest had matured, worrying that some unscrupulous people around the forest fringe communities were entering and exploiting the reserves for their personal gains. He therefore urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the Forestry Commission to protect, as the forest district intensified surveillance and monitoring to clamp down the illegal chainsaw operators. Twifo Atti-Morkwa DISEC arrests four illegal miners, dozens of equipment burnt

The Twifo Atti-Morkwa District Security Council (DISEC) in the early hours of Tuesday, raided illegal mining sites along the course of the Pra River in the district. Four were arrested and dozens of equipment such as chanfan and pumping machines were burnt. The eight-hour operation was led by Mr Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi, District Chief Executive, Superintendent Charles Addai Boateng, District Police Commander and Mr Richmond Addai Marfo, District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation. The move was aimed at protecting the sanctity of the river that serves thousands across the Central Region. Currently, the illegal mining activities along the Pra River in the Central Region is making it almost impossible for the Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to extract raw water from its Sekyere Hemang Treatment Plant to supply adequate potable water to residents of Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities. Pollution of the river, particularly its catchment for abstraction, has reduced water at its intake point, because of which the company has resorted to erratic supply of water to the affected communities, particularly the Cape Coast metropolis. Briefing the media after the exercise, Mr Nyantakyi, assured of the Assembly’s resolve to stamp-out the illegal mining in the area, particularly on water bodies. The Assembly would continue to work together with Chiefs, traditional rulers, and all stakeholders in the fight against illegal mining. The successful galamsey fight required collaborative national efforts, he stated, noting “you and I have to take the lead to collaborate closely to do this. “That is what we are doing to save humanity.” Mr Nyantakyi also appealed to all political parties and politicians to desist from politicising the national fight against the pervasive menace saying: “It is a united fight not a political fight.” Nonetheless, called for logistical support saying “we need live jackets and speed boats to chase out these notorious miners on the river bodies. “My clarion call is to all Ghanaians, particularly those who depend on river Pra for survival to come on board,” he appealed. O’Reilly SHS student stabbed to death

The tragic death of an 18-year-old final-year student from O’Reilly Senior High School has sparked outrage and concern over safety and discipline on school campuses. Edward Borketey Sackey, a General Arts student, was stabbed on Monday during a heated argument with a fellow student, which escalated into violence. The incident occurred shortly after the students completed an exam. Sackey reportedly got into a dispute with a schoolmate, identified only as Godwin, a Visual Arts student. The argument allegedly centered on a comparison of whose father was wealthier. The disagreement quickly devolved into a physical confrontation, during which Godwin allegedly stabbed Sackey multiple times. Sackey was rushed to the LEKMA Hospital by his peers in a desperate attempt to save his life. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. Videos and photos circulating on social media show the frantic efforts of students to help Sackey, as well as an image of him lying unconscious on a white cloth. The news of Sackey’s death has sent shockwaves through the school and the broader community, prompting a crucial meeting between the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the school’s management on Tuesday. The meeting, which involved the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Stephen Abamfo, and the Municipal Director of Education at the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), focused on how discipline is maintained on campus and the ongoing investigation into the incident. In a statement, Mr. Abamfo confirmed that an investigation was underway to uncover the circumstances leading to the tragic event. He also assured the public that measures were being taken to enhance safety at the school. Meanwhile, the father of the deceased, devastated by the loss of his son, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the school authorities. “The school authority has not said anything from yesterday up till now. The police have not called, the school authority has not called, even the boy who killed my son, neither the family have even reached me. That is why we are here to seek justice for my son,” he lamented. He recounted the painful sequence of events leading to his son’s death, describing how he was at work when he received a call from his niece, informing him of the altercation. Despite rushing to the school, he arrived only to learn that his son had already succumbed to his injuries. The suspect, Godwin, has since been arrested and is in police custody as investigations continue. The father of the deceased has demanded justice for his son and called for accountability from the school’s administration. Source: Ghana/Starrfm.com.gh
