Court grants travel consultant bail over alleged Nicaraguan visa fraud

The Accra Circuit Court Nine has granted a travel consultant GHC100,000.00 bail with two sureties for allegedly defrauding a tour operator of $15,000.00. Margius Adjei, 47, is accused of taking the money, equivalent to GHC225,000.00, from a travel and tour owner under the guise of obtaining Nicaraguan visas for his clients. Adjei pleaded guilty with an explanation to defrauding by false pretense, but his explanation resulted in a not guilty plea. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackom told the court that the complainant, Arahman Bashiru, is the Chief Executive Officer of Rashman Travel and Tours and lives in Madina. In May 2023, Bashiru contacted a witness to secure travel documents for his clients, who also linked Adjei to him. ASP Ackom said that after a conversation, Adjei promised to secure Nicaraguan visas for 20 of Bashiru’s clients within three months. Bashiru became convinced and gave Adjei USD15,000 to obtain the required documents for his clients. The prosecution said Adjei failed to fulfill his part of the deal after receiving the money and went into hiding, compelling Bashiru to petition the Director of the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigative Department, resulting in his arrest. ASP Ackom said Adjei admitted collecting GHC225,000.00 from Bashiru and refunded GHC30,000.00. After investigations Adjei was arraigned. GNA

Court remands Imam for allegedly threatening to kill wife

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a self-proclaimed religious leader to police custody for allegedly threatening to kill his wife. Imam Mohammed Lanson Abubakar, 44, also known as Andre, pleaded not guilty to the offence, but was detained by the Court after the prosecution said he jumped an earlier police inquiry bail. Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer informed the Court presided over by Mr. Isaac Addo that due to that act, the police had been unable to conclude the investigation, and that he may not appear for trial when granted bail. The Court asked about his whereabouts on March 27, 2024, when a bench warrant for his arrest was issued after he failed to appear in court. He was therefore remanded to assist police in investigation and to be brought back on September 2, 2024. According to Police Chief Inspector Laweh, Maimuna Sarki Abubakar, the complainant’s  is the accused’s wife,  a Social Worker and a Nigerian citizen residing in the United Kingdom. He said that Abubakar is a self-styled Imam and businessman of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, and the complainant was his estranged wife. Chief Inspector Lawer stated that Abubakar met Maimuna over social media, and they started chatting, during which time he presented himself to her as an Imam of a mosque and persuaded her to marry him, to which she accepted, and they married. Prior to the separation, Maimuna purchased a plot of land in East Trassaco from Abubakar and built a one-story dwelling on it, the Court heard. The prosecution said Maimuna subsequently furnished the house and returned to the United Kingdom, stating that whenever she visited Ghana to see her husband, she stayed in the property with him. Chief Inspector Lawer said in 2020, Abubakar persuaded Maimuna to buy and ship 2020 Chevrolet Silverado and 2019 Infinity CPX vehicles to him in Ghana, with the intention of selling the cars and using the proceeds to buy a parcel of land at Adjiringanor for her. Maimuna then bought the vehicles and shipped them to Abubakar, who used the proceeds to buy four plots of land in Adjiringanor. Later, the marriage deteriorated, and Abubakar threatened her during one of their disagreements, stating, “I have scammed you; I am taking over your building and all your property here in Ghana including your daughter. If you dare get closer to this property again, I will kill you.” In pleading for bail, Abubakar’s counsel said that her client did not jump bail, claiming that he travelled and did not threaten Maimuna as charged. The Court was told they are seeking a divorce at the Adentan Court. She said Abubakar is a responsible family person, had a fixed place of abode and would be available to stand trial. GNA

Shipping agent before court over fraud, forged documents

A shipping agent is before the Accra Circuit Court Nine for allegedly forging Food and Drugs Authority’s Bill of payment receipt to defraud a trader of GHC80,000.00. He did so under the pretext of clearing his three forty-footer containers from the Tema Harbour. Richard Nana Amoako, 43, the shipping agent or freight forwarder, pleaded not guilty to forgery, altering and possessing Food and Drugs Authority’s Bill of payment receipt to evade the requirement of the law. Amoako, was therefore granted a GHC100,000.00 bail with three sureties. In addition, the Court presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, ordered Amoako to report to the Police every Wednesday at 1000 hours. He should again deposit his Ghana card with the Court’s Registry. The Court asked the Prosecution to file witness statements, among other necessary documents and make them available to Amoako, the accused person, to assist him in his defense. Police Chief Inspector Daniel Danku, briefing the Court, said Mr Rexy Lovell Mensah, the Complainant, was a trader and resident of Sunyani-Abesim whereas Amoako, the accused, resided at Tema Community ‘22’. He said in March 2023, the Complainant engaged the accused person who is the Chief Executive Officer of Freight Masters Shipping Agency Limited, to clear his three (3) forty-footer containers which contained hospital mattresses and beds, shipped to him by a Non-Governmental Organisation in Germany to be distributed to hospitals in and around Sunyani. Chief Inspector Danku said because the goods had gone on demurrage, Amoako promised Mr Mensah that he would use his connections to clear the containers from the harbour within two weeks and he charged him GH¢40,000.00 per container. The accused person asked the complainant to pay for two containers so he would clear them within two weeks after the money had been paid. The Court heard that during March 2023, Mr Mensah paid GH¢80,000.00 into Amoako’s bank account which the accused acknowledged and promised to clear the first two containers within two weeks but he failed to honour his part of the agreement. The Prosecution said on August 07, 2023, the complainant reported the matter to the Police and the accused was invited. He reported on August 20, 2023, with his counsel and during investigation, he promised to clear one of the containers for the complainant. On September 04, 2023, Amoako cleared one of the containers for Mr Mensah, the complainant and promised to clear the other two containers within two weeks but all efforts made by Police and complainant proved futile, the Prosecution said. Chief Inspector Danku said Amoako sent a new bill to tell the complainant that, the GH¢80,000.00 was a part payment of the first container he cleared for him so he had to top up with GH¢23,199.55 for the first container which cost him GH¢103,199.55 and he provided some receipts to prove his point. When complainant saw the receipts, he informed Police that, the receipts were fake, thus Police wrote letters to Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Standard Board Authority and Food and Drugs Authority to ascertain the authenticity of the receipts, Police told the Court. The Prosecution said Food and Drugs Authority replied that, the receipts were not genuine and that, the Authority did not generate the said receipts. The accused was called several times to report but he failed, as such “Criminal Summons was served on him to appear before the Court.” Chief Inspector Danku said. GNA

Armed robbers kill two at Welembelle

Two friends were shot and killed by armed robbers who attacked and robbed a mobile money vendor at Welembelle in the Sissala East Municipality. Mr Jonas Dimah, the Assembly member of the Welembelle Electoral area, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that at about 1900 hours on Saturday, four armed men stormed a mobile money joint at Sukparibelle, a suburb of Welembelle and took away an unspecified amount of money amid sporadic shootings. He said all the people at the scene were asked to lie down before their money was taken away from them at gunpoint. According to him, after the robbery, the robbers attempted to escape but the deceased Munkailu Tordia, 40 years and Fuseini Benorwuo, 38 years a driver and a farmer, who saw the incident from a distance raised the alarm and decided to chase them, which resulted in the robbers shooting them to death. Other eyewitnesses said the deceased identified one of the robbers and mentioned the name, leading to the eventual shooting of the pair. “The moment after the attack, two of the robbers who could not start the engine of the unregistered Aloba motorcycle left it and bolted away while shooting in the air. This scared many of the residents who hid in their rooms in fear, a witness said. Upon hearing of the incident, angry youth combed the immediate surroundings in search of them but were unsuccessful. The Police in Welembelle also joined the community to pursue the robbers before Chief Superintendent Frederick Lumor, the Sissala East Divisional Commander visited the scene of the attack and interacted with the families of the deceased. He encouraged the elders and members of the community to partner with the Police by giving useful information that would help them arrest the suspects. He assured the people of swift investigation into the issue. No arrest has been made. The Welembelle robbery and the killing of the two have shocked the entire Sissala area where armed robbery of mobile money vendors and shops appears to be on the ascendency. For the past two months, robberies have been reported at Bugubelle, Kong, Challu and Welembelle. The Police in Tumu, however, had made some arrests in the robbery incident at Kong and the alleged attackers put before the court. Welembelle is the next largest community apart from Tumu with a population of close to 4000 people with fewer police personnel and several communities to serve, which are far from each other. The Assembly member appealed to the Inspector General of Police to increase the Police presence in Welembelle and open other Police posts in the Sissala East Municipality. The two deceased who left behind wives, children and other relatives have since been buried according to Islamic doctrines. GNA

Appointment of SC nominee Prof Oppong doesn’t violate the law – Deputy A-G

The Deputy Attorney-General (A-G) and Minister for Justice, Alfred Tuah-Yeboah says the nomination of a dual citizen as a Supreme Court judge does not violate the laws of Ghana. According to him, the Supreme Court has ruled against sections of the Citizenship Act, allowing dual citizens to hold key positions. Speaking to JoyNews on Wednesday, August 13, the Deputy AG said “It’s very clear that under our laws, you can be a dual citizen, but still be a judge of the Supreme Court. In April this year, a judgment was delivered to that effect. “So the nominee who came yesterday is qualified under our laws, not to the fact that he owes a Canadian citizenship, but for the judgment in April, he would have qualified to be a Supreme Court judge in Ghana.” His comment comes after the Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson expressed strong disapproval of the nomination of Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, a dual citizen for the position of Supreme Court judge. According to Dr. Forson, dual citizens are ineligible to hold key government positions, particularly as judges on the Supreme Court. During the vetting on Tuesday, August 12, Dr Forson, who serves on the Appointments Committee of Parliament, argued that Prof. Oppong does not qualify to be a Supreme Court judge due to his dual citizenship, insisting that Prof. Oppong must renounce his foreign citizenship before his approval can be recommended. “The Constitution, in Article 156(1), is clear that you would have to take an oath of allegiance, and the same Supreme Court has equated allegiance to nationality,” Dr Forson stated. “In my view, you do not qualify, and I believe that you would need to renounce your citizenship to be eligible for the role of a Supreme Court judge.” When asked what guarantees that the Supreme Court nominee will deliver justice if approved, Mr. Tuah-Yeboah expressed confidence in Prof. Oppong’s abilities. He said that although Prof. Oppong has not practiced as a lawyer, he is highly knowledgeable and capable of performing the duties of a judge diligently. “Yesterday you listened to him, watched him – an excellent professor. He knows his stuff, in fact, we were in the law school together, even though he’s one year behind me, and I know his worth. “In terms of his ability to deliver as a judge, I can assure you he has every quality that any judge should possess in the dispensation of justice, and I trust him that he will do his job as a judge,” he added.
