O’Reilly SHS student stabbed to death

The tragic death of an 18-year-old final-year student from O’Reilly Senior High School has sparked outrage and concern over safety and discipline on school campuses. Edward Borketey Sackey, a General Arts student, was stabbed on Monday during a heated argument with a fellow student, which escalated into violence.

The incident occurred shortly after the students completed an exam. Sackey reportedly got into a dispute with a schoolmate, identified only as Godwin, a Visual Arts student. The argument allegedly centered on a comparison of whose father was wealthier. The disagreement quickly devolved into a physical confrontation, during which Godwin allegedly stabbed Sackey multiple times.

Sackey was rushed to the LEKMA Hospital by his peers in a desperate attempt to save his life. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. Videos and photos circulating on social media show the frantic efforts of students to help Sackey, as well as an image of him lying unconscious on a white cloth.

The news of Sackey’s death has sent shockwaves through the school and the broader community, prompting a crucial meeting between the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the school’s management on Tuesday. The meeting, which involved the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education, Stephen Abamfo, and the Municipal Director of Education at the Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), focused on how discipline is maintained on campus and the ongoing investigation into the incident.

In a statement, Mr. Abamfo confirmed that an investigation was underway to uncover the circumstances leading to the tragic event. He also assured the public that measures were being taken to enhance safety at the school.

Meanwhile, the father of the deceased, devastated by the loss of his son, expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the school authorities. “The school authority has not said anything from yesterday up till now. The police have not called, the school authority has not called, even the boy who killed my son, neither the family have even reached me. That is why we are here to seek justice for my son,” he lamented.

He recounted the painful sequence of events leading to his son’s death, describing how he was at work when he received a call from his niece, informing him of the altercation. Despite rushing to the school, he arrived only to learn that his son had already succumbed to his injuries.

The suspect, Godwin, has since been arrested and is in police custody as investigations continue. The father of the deceased has demanded justice for his son and called for accountability from the school’s administration.
